6 Tips for Moving to Naples, Florida

6-tips-for-moving-to-Naples-FloridaThere are about 20 million people who consider Florida a great place to live. It’s not hard to understand why. Northerners are attracted by the warm climate and the seemingly endless outdoor recreational opportunities. Of course Florida is more than just Disney World and South Beach, and many people come to the Naples area to enjoy the museums, arts, theatre—and of course—the beautiful beaches.

There are, however, some adjustments to make when you move from elsewhere in the United States. Here are some things you’ll want to keep in mind if you’re planning a move to the Sunshine State.

Adjusting to the Weather

You can say farewell to snowstorms and freezing cold, but you’ll have to get used to hot, humid, muggy conditions throughout the summer. The good news is that Naples also offers a gently cooling sea breeze.

Prepare for Different Severe Weather

Hurricane safety is something to take seriously. You’ll want hurricane shutters and a reinforced roof, along with hurricane glass. Be prepared to stock supplies such as non-perishable food, water, battery radios, etc. You may not need any of these things but it’s good to be prepared.

Take Extra Care with Your Skin

The Florida sun can be pretty intense—especially if you have sensitive skin. Plan on using sunscreen regularly. And bear in mind that people aren’t the only species that enjoy the warm weather. Mosquitoes like the warm, humid climate as well, so be prepared to fend them off.

Driving Can Be “Different” Here

There is a lot of tourist traffic—and senior traffic—on the road. You need to keep that in mind as you drive because both groups tend to drive a little slower—and tourists are prone to a bit of gawking while they drive (plus they often aren’t sure exactly where they’re going).

Don’t forget to register

Once you make the decision to move you’ll want to take care of things such as your driver’s license, your change of address forms, your insurance, etc. The State of Florida has a portal at http://www.stateofflorida.com/Portal/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=38 that can help you take care of some of these items.

Be careful purchasing your home

As remodelers, we’re particularly aware of some of the problems homebuyers can run into. Be on the lookout for homes that have used Chinese drywall as that can cause some health problems. Also, watch for mold and mildew in homes that have been vacant without electricity for longer periods of time.

We think Florida—and the Naples area in particular—is a great place to live. And once you find a place you want to make home, we’d be delighted to help you turn it into your Naples dream home.
