Without fail, one of the biggest questions Naples homeowners have about the remodeling process is how long it will take before they can begin enjoying their “new” home. It’s probably no surprise that the answer is almost always: “It depends.”
The scope and complexity of your project, of course, plays a huge role in how much time it will take to complete. For instance, simply resurfacing exisiting kitchen cabinets takes much less time than completely redesigning your kitchen. Both can dramatically improve the look of your kitchen, but a kitchen redesign can also improve your kitchen’s usability and functionality.
If you happen to be considering a whole home remodel, you’re looking at a much more significant time commitment than simply redoing a powder room or a bedroom. Moving walls, or re-routing wiring or plumbing can add time (and expense) to your project. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do them. Sometimes, that’s what’s required in order to get the result you want. Those unknowns, however, make it difficult for a builder to commit to a specific timetable without all the information.
To be fair to you—and to your remodeler—it’s important to take time up front to outline your expectations. You’ll want to meet with your design team to discuss exactly what you want to accomplish. Once you’ve established your goals and the steps needed to achieve them, your builder can give you a pretty accurate timetable for completion of your project.
One of the keys to staying on schedule is to make sure you order your materials well ahead of the time you need them. It really helps both you and your builder if you’re not kept waiting for building materials because of manufacturers’ delays. It also gives you a bit of flexibility if you need to change your mind about something. (We’ve seen plenty of times when the material for a kitchen backsplash looked great to a customer in the showroom, but wasn’t quite right in their kitchen).
As design-build remodelers, we can often steer you away from some common design pitfalls before you get too far into the remodeling process. Not only will that reduce the amount of time it takes to complete your project, but it makes the whole process less stressful for you—and it can even save you some money.
Remodeling your Naples-area home could take a few weeks, or it could take a couple of months. It depends on the complexity and size of your project. But the time you spend up front thinking through what you want and discussing it with your designer will pay off in the end. Don’t rush yourself and deprive yourself of the home you really want.
