Preparing your Naples Home for Winter? Really?

Preparing-your-Naples-Home-for-Winter-Really.jpgLet’s face it, we do winter in Florida a little bit differently than the folks up north. But just because we don’t put away our shorts and pull out our parkas doesn’t mean we don’t need to prepare our homes for the winter. We may not worry about blizzards around Naples, but there are certain winter maintenance checks that are still good for Florida residents to keep an eye on. Here are a few that will help you stay more comfortable this winter.
  • Change Your Furnace Filter: Chances are you don’t use your furnace much. That’s one reason it’s easy to forget about changing the filters. But there can be nights when it’s cooler than you’d like. Make sure you’re not blowing dirt and dust through the air if you need to take a chill off the evening air.
  • Check Your Gutters: You don’t need to worry about snow, but leaves and other debris can still collect in your gutters and impede rain run-off (yep, we still get plenty of that in Florida in the winter). It’s important to keep water draining away from your home’s foundation and keeping the gutters clear is a simple first step.
  • Fire Knows No Seasons: Fall is a good time to replace all of your smoke alarms and CO detectors. Fresh batteries are cheap insurance against fire and CO danger. Also, make sure you have a fire extinguisher that’s easy to access in your home—and that it’s adequately charged. Again, that’s one of those things that’s easy to overlook because it (hopefully) never gets used.
  • Check Guest Rooms: Winter is often the time that your friends and relatives up north start thinking warm thoughts about you! If you have guest bedrooms and bathrooms, late fall is a good time to make sure that everything is in good working order in rooms that don’t get used often. Check windows to make sure they’re operating efficiently. Run sinks in the bathrooms and flush the toilets to ensure they’re performing properly.
  • Schedule an HVAC Check-up: This time of year is a good time to have your whole Heating Venting and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system checked out. You know a lot of snowbirds will be hitting town after Thanksgiving and turning on their systems for the first time in many months. Get a jump on that and schedule a check-up before they arrive for the winter.
  • Don’t Forget the Pictures: Take a picture of yourself sitting outside in the glorious Naples winter weather to include in your holiday cards that you send to your friends up north. They’re sure to love it!
