Quality vs. Quantity when Remodeling

Quality vs. Quantity when Remodeling.jpgThere are a number of important things to consider before launching into a remodel of your Naples home. Here’s a helpful post that looks at 10 things you should do before you even get started. One additional issue every homeowner should address is how to weigh the respective importance of quality vs. quantity when remodeling.

That can be a bit of a ticklish question. In all of our years of building and remodeling, we’ve never run into anyone with unlimited resources. Often the question arises (in one form or another), “Is it better to do as much as you can with what you have to spend, or is it better to do a few things really well?”

Not everyone is going to agree on this, but we’ll offer our opinion as a company that has done a lot of renovations in the Naples area over the past several years. In our experience, our clients are always happier when they choose value over price and when they focus on doing a few things well over doing many things that really don't meet their expectations. Let's look at a couple of reasons why this seems to happen repeatedly.

Do It Right and Do It Once

I’m not for a moment saying that if we remodel your kitchen or bathroom, or even your whole house, that you’ll never want to make changes again. My point is that if you settle for something that’s not really the solution you wanted, you won’t be satisfied. Whether you’re trying to cut corners on design, materials, or labor, you’re just not going to be happy. And sooner or later (probably sooner) you’re going to want to make it right. And that means doing it over. Not only do you end up paying more in the long run, but you also forfeit the satisfaction and enjoyment you should have had in the first place.

Your Priorities May Change

When you’re forced to choose between projects it makes you focus on what’s really important to you. We’ve all had ideas that got us excited—only to lose our enthusiasm later. A good design-build remodeler will help you think through the process to identify what's really important to you. That means focusing on changes to your home that will enhance your lifestyle. Your home should reflect the way you actually live—not the way you think you might like to live. Here's an oversimplified example. Building a library/reading room won't make you read more books if you don't enjoy reading in the first place. On the other hand, if you love reading, that same project will be very rewarding.

Quality Isn’t Just About Price

Sometimes people confuse quality with price. Yes, you'll pay somewhat more for quality (design, materials, labor), but simply spending more doesn't guarantee you'll be satisfied. Another way to look at what I mentioned above is that true quality is about your quality of life—not how much you spend. Picking the right remodeling project (and selecting the right remodeler!) is more important than doing a lot of things that don't improve your enjoyment of your home.

There are a couple of other important factors you won’t want to overlook when planning your Naples-area remodeling project. Experience and adherence to the schedule are absolutely essential to a great remodeling experience. Here’s a post that delves into that in more detail.

Experience has taught us that our clients are happier when they focus on quality over quantity. And by the way, one advantage of working with a design-build remodeler is that sometimes we can help you come up with solutions that accomplish more than what you originally planned. That’s why it’s a good idea to sit down with a professional and talk about what’s important to you and what your budget is. Then see what he or she can do to provide solutions to your most important remodeling issues.
