How best to explain the design-build process . . . here’s an example: I planned my own wedding just a few years ago. I did the research, browsing every bride magazine in print, and has a stack of “must haves” a mile high. I compile a list of people to contact and services needed . . . the florist, the caterer, the location arrangements, the list begins to resemble a book. Many of the items and service providers are specific to weddings, things I just don’t need on an everyday basis. Therefore, I’ll have to educate myself on provider reputations, quality of work, reliability, etc. I don’t want to find out a florist can’t deliver 2 hours before the wedding. In order to complete the necessary arrangements in time, I will have to give up every spare minute of my life for the next 6 months. And this is supposed to be a joyous time???Solution? Enter the Wedding Planner, my new best friend. One company with a team of experienced professionals who know all the ins and outs of which service providers to choose, and who to avoid, the latest trends, what works and what doesn’t. I now have one contact who communicates our choices and preferences to all the providers. They manage scheduling, specifications, contracts, and all the million details to deliver a beautiful, crisis-free wedding. I can enjoy the time wedding planning without the stress. Does the wedding cost a little more than doing it all myself? Of course, people can’t work for free, but well worth every penny.
In much the same way, a design-build company is your solution to a home remodel project. You are working with a team of professionals. The contractor, the designer, the project manager, the production manager, the lead carpenter and crew are all under one roof. What is imagined, designed, specified and built comes through one group of people. You have one contact that coordinates and provides all the million details needed to deliver a beautiful, crisis-free completed space.
Here are the top reasons for choosing a design-build firm:
- Design-build saves time. Having the construction team all under one roof eliminates delays which commonly occur in the standard method of separate parties providing disjointed services. Coordination and scheduling are critical to a timely completion.
- Design-build saves money on costly mistakes. All information on construction methods and materials are shared within the team. Everyone is aware of the details, and all parties are immediately updated with any changes or deviations to the plan. With everyone on the same page, mistakes and re-dos are avoided.
- Design-build is client-friendly. After all, it’s your project and you should be an integral part of the design process. The design-build process eliminates the necessity of repeating yourself to 3 or 4 different parties. You work with one team, a team who listens and expedites. Less room for miscommunication, more accountability to the client. You can enjoy the design process without the headaches of coordinating, scheduling, and managing the process.
While a wedding only lasts a few hours (and no one really remembers that the flowers were a little wilted or the band was a little lack-luster) a remodel project can last a lifetime. If you make a bad choice of materials or design, you may have to live with it for a very long time. So, a design-build company might just be your new best friend in the remodeling process.
